Anti Amoebic Drugs – Uses, Signs of Amoeba

Introduction

These are drugs useful in infection caused by the anaerobic protozoa Entamoeba histolytica.

An amebicide (or amoebicide) is an agent used in the treatment of amoebozoa infections, called amoebiasis.

Amoebiasis in tissues is treated with either metronidazole, tinidazole, nitazoxanide, dehydroemetine or chloroquine, while luminal infection is treated with diloxanide furoate or iodoquinoline. Effective treatment against all stages of the disease may require a combination of medications.

CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

  1. Tissue amoebicide
    • For both intestinal and extraintestinal amoebiasis:
      • Nitroimidazoles: Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Secnidazole, Ornidazole, Satranidazole
      • Alkaloids: Emetine, Dehydroemetine
    • For extraintestinal amoebiasis only:
      • Chloroquine
  2. Luminal amebicides
    • Amide : Diloxanide furoate, Nitazoxanide
    • 8-Hydroxyquinolines: Quiniodochlor (iodochlorhydroxyquin, Clioquinol), Diiodohydroxyquin (Iodoquinol)
  3. Antibiotics: Tetracyclines, Paromomycin

Some questions

What is the best medicine for amoeba?

Metronidazole is the drug of choice for symptomatic, invasive disease; paromomycin is the drug of choice for noninvasive disease. Because parasites persist in the intestines of 40-60% of patients treated with metronidazole, this drug should be followed with paromomycin to cure luminal infection.

What are the first signs of amoeba?

Generally beginning within two to 15 days of exposure to the amoeba, signs and symptoms of naegleria infection may include:

  • A change in the sense of smell or taste.
  • Fever.
  • Sudden, severe headache.
  • Stiff neck.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Confusion.
  • Loss of balance.

How do you kill an amoeba?

Gastrointestinal amebiasis is treated with nitroimidazole drugs, which kill amoebas in the blood, in the wall of the intestine and in liver abscess. These drugs include metronidazole (Flagyl) and tinidazole (Tindamax, Fasigyn).

What should I eat if I have amoeba?

You may eat soft, plain foods. Good choices are soda crackers, toast, plain noodles, or rice, cooked cereal, applesauce, and bananas. Eat slowly and avoid foods that are hard to digest or may irritate your stomach, such as foods with acid (like tomatoes or oranges), spicy or fatty food, meats, and raw vegetables.

Can garlic kill amoeba?

Allicin created when garlic cloves are crushed, protects the plant from soil parasites and fungi and is also responsible for garlic’s pungent smell. It is a natural weapon against infection that disables dysentery causing amoebiasis by blocking two groups of enzymes, cysteine proteinases and alcohol dehydrogenases.

What water temperature do amoebas live in?

The organism may also be found in warm pools that are not properly chlorinated, and in water heaters, the CDC says. It can live in temperatures as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius), and can sometimes survive at higher temperatures for short periods.
