How to Study for B.A.M.S. 2nd Prof. – Guide

Study pattern in 2nd year is difficult as in B.A.M.S. we need to study according 3 aspects firstly from exam point of view, secondly from knowledge point of view and lastly practical point of view here in this article we cover all three expects as well as their utility and lately This article will also contain books for all three expects.

Before starting how to study we need to know the subjects consisting of 2nd Prof. And why we are studying them and also the answer the question why we are studying the Ayurvedic expect of the subject.
So, coming to the point 2nd Prof. Consist of 4 subjects much like every other year the subjects are:-

  1. Rog Nidan :- modern comparison is Pathology this subject deals with causes, signs & symptoms of different diseases. Importance of studying this subject is that we can clearly indentify the cause, and which disease is it so that we can plan the treatment accordingly but now answer to ques why we are studying Ayurvedic expect ( nah! U guessed wrong i m not gona say becoz we are studying Ayurveda!). So answer of this ques is this subject tells the signs before the disease that this disease is gonna happen in future so that we could stop the cause at that point of time only, second benifit is Ayurvedic expect let’s you confirm the disease without diagnostic tests.
  2. Ras Shastra & Bhaishajaya kalpana :- Their isn’t any modern comparison available. But utility of this subject is much more as this subject deals with the treatment of chornic & incurable diseases ( the diseases which other systems of medicine and practice told can’t be cured) seems interesting na! That we can cure incurable diseases this will be leart with metals, minerals and poisons and most importantly Parad (hg) formed from God Shiva’s sperm. The second part deals with making medicines in eatable forms and depending upon their power how could be that eaten like making tablets, syrups etc etc.
  3. Drvaya Gunn :- Modern comparison of this subject is pharmacology. Another important subject from Clinical point as this subject help us in visualising the treatment as we now Ayurveda treats patients with organic medicines. This subject help us in identify qualties and uses like what diseases can be cured by this Dravya . And also what should be eatables for this disease and what shouldn’t be so that disease doesn’t recures. Similarly the modern expect helps in visualise treatment according to allopathy.
  4. Charak Samhita Purvad :- last but the not the least this subject helps in learning principles, diagnosis, and signs that the disease is in its incurable form. Purvad consits of 66 chapters and 5 sthans ( Sutra, Nidan, Viman, Sharir, Indriya). It covers all over the subjects from first year to second year like nidan for rog nidan, sutra for drvaya gunn, sharir for anatomy, viman for physiology. It’s like the interconnecting link from thinking to treatment.

After knowing about the subjects next comes the no. Of exams it will carry so that we could study accordingly. I Know interest matters but during exams we could still make use of it.

  • Rog nidan :- 2 exams, 200 marks practical – modern pathology 100 marks and ayurvedic part 100 marks ( here this 100 marks means 50 marks in both exams)
  • Dravya gunn :- 2 exams, 200 marks practical – dominated by ayurvedic part just 30 marks modern pharmacology.
  • Ras Shastra & bhaishajaya kalpana :- 2 exams, 200 marks practical- both parts get one exam separately.
  • Charak samhita :- single exam and 100 marks practical
Wondering the title of post is how to Study and still you haven’t reached the point how to study? Don’t worry it will told in next section surely!

So before getting to the point how to study this section lets you know the books ( recommendation of our site you should take to study can depend on person to person) the following table divides in 2 section first deals with must have and second one deals with books you should take for higher knowledge not for exam point of view.

SubjectMust HaveOptional
Dravya Gunn -1Masnsi DeshpandeyK D Tripathi/ shah
Dravya Gunn – 2Bhav parkash Nighantu
Rog Nidan -1 Nikki BulaniHarsh Mohan
Rog Nidan -2 Ajay Kumar SharmaMadhav Nidan
Charak SamhitaKashinath Pandey & Gorakhnath ChaturvediRavidutt Tripathi
Ras ShastraMohar Pal MeenaRas Ratan Samuchya/ Ras Tarangini
Bhaisajaya kalpanaMohar Pal MeenaShadangar Samhita

Some people won’t agree with the book selection but the reason for selection *Bhav Parkash as detailed, non detailed plants, vargha, jangham dravya all together aren’t provided in any book presenting syllabus. ( I know green charts/ drvayagunn charts present same too but it’s better to have a book it makes easy to read and understand). **Second contradiction will be regarding Charak the reason is Ravidutt is good as Charak is provided in notes form with summary at last and use of flowcharts, tables , and bigger font makes it easy to understand but problem comes in sometime types as the author sometimes not just translating mixes up his own types with Acharya Charak’s then would not be good for exam point what i fell. *** The reader may select his own set of books according to his/ her point and way of study. Here mentioned are just to let you know our point.

Finally comes the section of How to Study :-

Here in this section we won’t tell you how to study yes you heared right( thinking what about the title) here the study means your way of study that can’t be changed as you practiced it over the years. But here we will let you know how to study effectively. This section has 2 section’s the first one deals with the time far before exams and this section has 2 sub division knowledge/ practical and exams, the second section deals with the study during the exam point of you. The Japanese word “kaizen” the power of self knowledge and knowledge about it leads to know that Habits require a time period of 21 days to form so similarly preparing for exams would also require same.

Section 1 :- Far before exams :-

Firstly dravyagun :- we should start learning botanical names and families of detailed plant we can learn nearly 4-5 names daily basis it would Decrease the pressure during exams. Secondly We can study 1 plant daily basis ( total plants needed to studied 104+148 = 252) so daily basis one plant will do it. I would agree with most of the person letting you know that dravyagun exam 1 is scoring and lets you pass the exams but here as we have a lot of time we could prepare for the weaker section, this section will also lead practice/ knowledge/ clinical expect.

Rog Nidan:- So much similar to dravyagun we should focus on second exam here as paper one is scoring and can be easily grasped but paper 2 pays a lot of importance in clinical use. So here we can study one disease in a week ( you heard right one disease in a week becoz total no. Of diseases we need to study are 48) so it would be enough if we study 1 disease in a week but with full knowledge. Pathology is considered easy subject by most with comparision with other subjects.

Ras Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana :- So for this subject my suggestion would be Studying one element in 2-3 days and for bhasijya on alternate days. Most will say focus on ras shastra becoz a lot of no. Of re appears then any other subject i would agree with them becoz their is a lot to learn but Don’t Panic we solved it. All the learning portion had been made simple by us.

Charak Samhita :- suggestion would be regular study on daily basis it could be chapter or half but on daily basis with making short notes according to yourself. Benifit of studying regularly helps in connection with other subjects too like chapter 4 , 26 for dravyagun, chapter 4 for bhaisaija and complete nidan sthan for rog nidan. So according to me main Focus during this time should be on Sutra Sthan

Section 2 : During exams

For this section nearly all the people who studied will agree with my point of you becoz it’s made up of all the things leared in the experience. First of all the main requirement for this is to have syllabus as during the course of exam one should study according to marking and topics according to syllabus.

Drvayagun :- For exam no. 1 i would suggest to study nighantus first (3 nighantus and 1 would come up for short). After that i would suggest to study shad padarth and then would suggest to go for the remaining. Now for exam no. 2 i would suggest to firstly study jangham drvaya and vargha as these are scoring topics and will surely come for 20 marks and takes less time to study after that i would suggest to go for detailed drugs ras panchak( soon trick for learning it will be made available till then proceed for your own notes you made in the section 1)

Ras Shastra & Bhaishajaya kalpana:- for the Ras shastra i would suggest you to study history and Parad first as these consist of 50 marks. After then you should study modern portion ( Gmp, drug & cosmetic act, pharmovisilence, standerisation, storage unit) these 5 articles are important becoz less time and more marks and one will come for sure. Lastly go for vargha ( we provided trick to learn for all these). For Bhaisajaya kalpana :- firstly study panch vidh kashay kalapna, then go for modern portion  ( machines, gmp etc etc) then go for kritan vargha and lastly for other kalpnaye.

Rog Nidan :- for exam one one should go firstly for Panch Nidan ( consist of most no. Marks and comparetively small topic) after panchnidan one should proceed with modern portion as it is also scoring one. For exam no. 2 one should firstly study upsargan janay vyadhi, after that pranvaha strotas vayadhi and then raswaha strotus to mental disorders and lastly for other strotras.

Charak samhita :- one should firstly study nidan sthan ( 8 chapters for 15 marks ) and also takes less time small chapters and most of which already studied in Rog nidan. Second one should go to study Indriya sthan ( 12 chapters but comparetively smallest sthan in the book), then one should go for viman sthan ( 8 chapters for 25 marks) going for it third reason is the 8th chapter of viman sthan is the biggest chapter in book and also the important one so takes time but worth it. Then one should go for Sutra sthan ( one would disagree here with me and saying to go for sharir sthan but i won’t suggest that becoz sutra got 40 marks weighage and also some portion of sharir sthan can be covered inside sutra and somewhat we had studied in anatomy so better go for thing we have no idea).

*Comment you ideas and your suggestions to improve the guide.😊
