• Antidiarrheal :
Treatment of motion of stool three or more watery stool in 24hrs or excess of water in feaces. Eg. ORS, Pectin, Loperamide.
• Antiemetic :
Drugs are used to prevent or suppress vomiting. Eg. Cinnarizine, Meclozine, Doxylamine.
• Hepatoprotective :
Which prevents liver disease. Eg. Cucurma longa, Brassica, Silymarin.
• Diuretics :
Drugs which cause a net loss of sodium and water in urine, sodium balance is soon restored, relief in edema. Eg. Mannitol, Glycerol, Thiazide.
• Lithotripic :
That dissolves all type of stones. Eg. Amiloride, Cholic acid, Digoxin.
• Anti inflammatory :
Contribution to suppression of inflammation, especially in inital stage. Eg. Aspirin, isoprofan, Etodolac.
• Hormonal therapy :
Anterior Pituitary hormones=
GH– only hypo-pituitary Dwarfism
TSH– not used for replacement of endogenous def. Since it is less satisfactory than Thyroid Hormone.
ACTH– used in replacement of endogenous def, use in treatment of allergic inflammatory disorders.
LH– for induction of ovulation.
HCG– It can be used with FSH, to promote decent of test in cryptorchism for delayed puberty in boys.
• Anti obesity :
Controls the weight with min side effects Eg. Orlistat, Metaformin, Orexin.
• Antidiabetic :
Control the sugar level in blood, increased due to insufficient insulin secretion from pancreas. Eg. Tolazamide, Tobutamide, Glyburide.
• Antithyroid :
Control the over production of thyroid hormone. Eg. Mathimazol, Carbimazol, Sodium iodide.
• Galactogogens :
That aid in initiating and maintaining adequate milk products. Eg. Domperidone, Metoclopramide.
• Contraceptive :
Hormonal preparation used for reversible suppression of fertility. Eg. Unwanted-72, MTP tablet, Elinest.
• Styptics :
Which stops the blood flow. Eg. Thrombin, fibrin, vasoconstrictor.
• Antihistamine :
Drugs comparatively antagonize action of histamine at the H1 receptors relief of allergies disorder. Eg. Cetirizine, loratazide, levocetirizine.
• Antimicrobial :
Substance produced by microorganisms which selectively suppress the growth or kill their microorganisms at low concentration. Eg. Tetracyclin, Osetaminin.
• Antibiotics :
Substance produced by microorganisms which selectively supress the growth or kill their microorganisms at low concentration. Eg. Penicillin, streptomycin, Amoxicillin, Azrithromyosin.
• Antimalarial :
Treatment and presence of relapse of malaria. Eg. Quinine, chloroquine, amodiaquine.
• Amoebicidal :
Eg. Chloroquine, Tetracycline
#Antifilarial: Eg. Praziquanted, Piperazine, Dithezanane.
• Anthelmentic :
Drugs that either kill or expel infesting helminths. Eg. Albendazole, Mebendazole.
• Antifungal :
Drugs used for superficial and deep fungal infections. Eg. Fluconazole, Nystatin, Hamycin.
• Vaccines :
Are antigenic minerals consisting of the whole microorganisms or one of its products. Eg. inactivated Thyroid-parathyriod, Rabies, Hapetitis, Tetnus.
• Antirabies :
Eg. Imovox rabies vaccine, neural tissue vaccine.
• Antivenom :
Eg. Anti snake venom, Gotalidae, Stonefish venom, Cobra venom, Antihistamine.
• Antiseptic :
Agents used on living surface are antiseptic while those used on inanimate object are called disinfectant or inhibits the growth of leathal action. Eg. Chloroamphemical, phenol, vancomycin, alcohol, Ethyl alcohol Iodine.
• Opthalmic practice :
Eg. fluroresein, Acetozolamide, Timolol betaxolal.
• Anticancer :
Anticancer drugs either kill cancer cells or modify their growth used as therapy. Eg. Carboplatin, Cisplatin, Mitomycin, Radio iodine.
• Immunomodulator :
Stimulates the antibody formation by inhibition of WBC formation, modify immune response. Eg. Fibrogastin, Azathiprine, 6-MP.
• Antidiuretics :
They inhibits the water excretion without affecting salt excretion, drug that reduce urine volume. Eg. Desmopressin, Lypressin, Amiloride.
• Anaesthetic :
Drugs which produces reversible loss of all sensation and consciousness.
Eg. Halothane, Thiopental, Propofol.
• CNS Depressants :
Mostly mild CNS depressants, which are aimed to control the symptoms of anxiety, produce restful state of mind without interfering with normal mental or physical function. Eg. Diazepam, Alprozolam, Lorazepam, Oxazepam.
• Sedative :
Drugs that subduces excitement and calms the subject without including sleep. It refers to decrease responsiveness to any level of stimulation, decrease in motor activity.
Eg. Barbiturates, Diazepam, Triazolam.
• Hypnotic :
Drugs that induces and maintain sleep similar to normal arousable sleep.
Those with quicker onset, shorter duration and steeper dose response preferred as hypnotics. Hypnotics at lower dose may act as sedative.
Eg. Barbiturates, Alprozolam, Diazepam.
• Transquilisers / Antipsychotic :
Eg. Alprazolam, Diazepam.
• Antipyretic :
Drugs which reduce body temperature in fever, but do not cause hypothermia in normal thermic individual. Fever during infection and tissue injury.
Eg. Asprin, Ibuprofen.
• Analgesics :
Work by affecting transducing property of free nerve ending, so the stimuli that normally do not elicit pain are able to do so.
Or
Release pain without consciousness.
Eg. Paracetamol, Aspirin, Morphine.
• Antiepileptis :
Which reduce loss of disturbance of consciousness characters in body movement of autonomic hyperactivity.
Eg. Primiodone, Valponic Acid.
• Antihypertensive :
Drugs used to lower the blood pressure in hyper tension.
Eg. Thioazide diuretics, Beta- blockers, Ca -Channelblockers, Renin inhibitor.
• Antiangial :
Drugs are those that prevent, abort or terminate attacks of angina pectoris.
* Angina Pectoris= Pain syndrome due to induction of an adverse oxygen supply demand situation in a portion of the myocardium.
Eg. Nitrates, Beta-blockers, Ca-channel blockers.
• Antiplatelets :
Inhibits the platelet aggregation in Myocardial, Thrombosis.
Eg. Aspirin, Ticlopidine.
• Hypolipidaemic Diuretics :
Drugs which decrease the level of lipids and lipoprotein in blood. Hypolipidaemic drugs have attached considerable attention because of their potential to prevent cardiovascular diseases by regarding the accelerated atherosclerosis in hyperlipidemic individual.
Eg. Zocor, Levocor, Neomycin.
• Haemopoetic :
Anaemia, Iron deficient form of cell.
Eg. Cisplastin, Filgrastrin, Levorastin.
• Coagulants :
Substance which promotes coagulation at haemorrhagic condition.
Eg. Warfin, Vit K.
• Bronchodialators :
They relives cough in such individual and improve the effectiveness of cough in clearing secretions by increasing surface velocity of airflow during the act of coughing should be used only when an element of bronchoconstrictor is present and not routinery.
Eg. Salmerol, Theophylline.
• Expectorant :
Drugs believed to increase bronchial secretion or reduce its viscosity, facilitating its removal by coughing.
Eg. Potttasium iodide, Pottasium citrate, Tolu, Vasaka.
• Digestants :
Which enhances the digestion process, a number of proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic enzyme.
Eg. Pepsin, Papain, Pancreatin.
• Carminative :
Prevent gas in GIT and relive pain in stomach. Help in expulsion of gases.
Eg. Ginger, Ajwain, Asafoetida.
• Antacids :
Substance which neutralize gastric acid and raise pH of gastric contents.
Eg. Zantac, Prilosec.
• Laxative :
Aperients, Purgative and Cathartics are combinely called Laxatives. Drugs that promotes evacuation of bowels.
Eg. Methyl cellulose, Castor oil, Dulcolax.
