Home Gardening according to Ayurveda

Home Gardening can be hobby for some. And life for the others. Trees maybe besties for some whereas a source of income to the others. Every one in daily life uses some or the other plant products. We often think of planting trees at home or in schools specially during Environmental days.

But what if we know which plant we should plant in our homes and which we shouldn’t?? As a Greenery lover, i was wondering the same.

Now you might be thinking why was i wondering it? Reason is i heared from my Mother that Peepal tree isn’t good to be planted at home, but we pray them at temples. So I started finding references. This is why in this Article, I am sharing the same with you. Hope you like it, will wait for you feedback in the comments.

Plants good to be planted at home:-

Plants in home (Home Gardening) should be planted in the West, North and East direction. As these are auspicious, brings home blessing for children and wealth.

  • All wishes get fulfilled by planting Nyogrodh tree also known as Banyan tree (Ficus bangalensis) in the East direction at home.
    • Vata or Nyogrodh shouldn’t be planted in the West direction.
  • It’s lucky to plant Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) in West direction at home. (Brihat samhita) (Vriksa Ayurveda) (Garha samhita)
    • It’s clearly indicated that Peepal shouldn’t be planted in East direction (savi vriti brihat samhita)

**It is also mentioned in various Classical text that the shadow of a plant shouldn’t fall on the house. (Raja valabha 1/28) (vriksha Ayurveda)

Plants that should not be planted at homes:-

Plants at home shouldn’t be planted in South direction or in the Corner directions ( i.e. North-East etc etc ), as doing this brings Misfortune and Bad luck at home. A Few plant names that we must not plant in our houses are:-

  • Badir / Ber (Ziziphus mauritiana)
  • Banana (Musa paradisiaca)
  • Pomegranate (Punica granatum)
  • Lemon (Citrus limon)
  • Jambu / Jamun (Syzygium cumini)
  • Eranda (Ricinus communis)
  • Kanchnar (Bauhinia variegata)
  • Peepal* (Ficus religiosa)
  • Shleshmantak (Cordia dichotoma)
  • Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)
  • Karanj (Millettia pinnata)

Planting the above mentioned trees at home brings misfortune, so the should be avoided.

**Here is confusion regarding Peepal; as mentioned earlier peepal in West direction is praised and here it’s denied. So it can be understood that for in any direction other than the West, it is not preferred to be planted at homes. It is my point of view on it, i may be wrong too, or I’ll find more references regarding it.

Now lets see a few plants that should not be planted at home (Not appropriate for Home Gardening)

Specific Plants and their effects:-

  • Haridra (Curcuma longa) and Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) even if they get planted themselves causes lack of fertility and loss of money at home.
    • Reason told here is because these plants are considered as a ‘Home to evil spirits‘ so planting them at home attracts them.
